Following a grid dispatch instruction, SPIC Green Energy's Shandong company has connected the 142.3 MW / 284.6 MWh independent storage project at its Weifang wind-solar-storage base. The facility supports one of China's third-batch large wind and solar bases in desert, Gobi and arid areas. Its connection completes the planned 350 MW / 700 MWh of independent storage at the base, adding a market-based balancing resource to support Shandong's main grid and renewable-energy integration.

The Weifang renewable-energy base has planned installed capacity of 1.3 GW, of which 850 MW is in operation. Its early design coordinated independent and generation-associated storage, including equipment selection, integration and connection planning. Before commissioning, approval from the Shandong Energy Administration changed the storage from generation-associated to independent status, and it obtained electricity-market participant qualifications, broadening potential revenue channels and operating flexibility.

The project uses lithium iron phosphate batteries, described in the report as a mature technology offering thermal stability, long cycle life and rapid response. Close coordination between EMS and BMS manages charging and discharging to respond accurately and reliably to grid dispatch instructions.

At full operation, the project is expected to shift more than 190 million kWh between peak and off-peak periods each year, reducing differences between electricity supply and demand, providing more room for renewable integration and strengthening regional supply resilience and flexibility.

During construction, the team focused on safety, schedule, cost and quality, coordinating equipment supply and site work and concentrating on storage-unit installation, commissioning and joint testing. The report states that the storage system achieved full-capacity grid connection in three months.

During the fourth-quarter construction push, the company plans to continue work on phase four of the Weifang PV development in line with SPIC's balanced-growth strategy, focusing on key milestones and efficient project delivery to support a clean, low-carbon, secure, sufficient, economical, coordinated and flexible energy system.
