BIPV and rooftop-mounted solar: define the building scope first
Building-integrated photovoltaics changes the role of the solar component in the building envelope.
Rooftop-mounted PV is installed on a building, while building-integrated photovoltaics can replace parts of the conventional building material. This distinction affects how a proposal should be described and evaluated.
Ask what the product is replacing
For an integrated roof or facade product, identify its building function and supporting documentation. Review the interfaces between the solar system, weatherproofing, structure and maintenance arrangements with qualified professionals.
Avoid comparing only watts
A project may need to consider architectural requirements, installation sequence and the division of responsibility between building and electrical contractors. A standard module comparison alone does not capture those requirements.
Classify project examples carefully. A low-profile mounting arrangement should not automatically be described as BIPV without understanding the actual building function.
